A Generous Gesture coupled with Humility

Leonard Abess Jr.
A Miami banker who quietly shared US$60 million out of his own pocket with 399 of his current staff and even 72 former workers after selling his bank to a Spanish bank, with each receiving an average of about US$127,000. He was singled out for praise by President Barack Obama in his congressional address Tuesday. Abess and his wife attended as Obama's guest.

"I think everybody was surprised. But knowing Leonard,
the type of person he is, I can believe him giving it away,"

said retiree William Perry, who spent 43 years at City
National Bank of Florida, rising from janitor to vice
president. Perry, 78, got $50,000, which he is using to
help his son pay for law school.

"It was like a lottery, only better," Virginia C. Dunn,
managing senior vice president, said of the gift.
"Because it came from someone's heart."
Abess' father founded the bank in 1946 and he began his career in the print shop, working his way up the corporate ladder. His family sold the bank in the early 1980s to an investment group, which in turn sold it to a Colombian coffee magnate. When the magnate was convicted of fraud, Abess bought a majority stake out of bankruptcy in 1985 for $21 million, all of it borrowed, and then acquired the rest for $6 million. The bank, under his ownership, grew from $400 million in assets and seven offices to $2.75 billion in assets and 18 offices.

Sharing the wealth with staffers came naturally. Abess and his wife, Jayne, have long been big contributors to local organizations, such as the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and Mount Sinai Medical Center. In 2006, the Abesses gave $5 million to the University of Miami to promote environmental studies.

Abess never wanted to make a big deal out of his largesse; he didn't even show up at the bank when the envelopes were distributed in November. It wasn't until he mentioned the bonuses in a recent interview with The Miami Herald that they became publicly known. Asked later what motivated him, Abess said he had long dreamed of a way to reward employees. He had been thinking of creating an employee stock option plan before he decided to sell the bank.

"Those people who joined me and stayed with me
at the bank with no promise of equity - I always
thought some day I'm going to surprise them,"

he said. "I sure as heck don't need [the money]."

"I knew some of these people since I was 7 years old.
I didn't feel right getting the money myself,"
    said
Abess, who was concerned that their 401(k) plans had
taken a beating in the downdraft on Wall Street last year.

A Beautiful Day

Stood like a Rooster!
Saw this up in the sky today.
It was almost a complete semi-circle.
Look closer, there were actually 2 rainbows.
A better day=)

Gravity

"Humor is the only test of gravity, and gravity of humor; for a subject which will not bear raillery is suspicious, and a jest which will not bear serious examination is false wit."

H3 OP Assessment

Today is the judging day for oral presentation of my research project
hence it's supposedly the day my H3 research is finally completed.
I woke up at 5plus in the morning so that i could catch the first bus
because near to 1.5 hour is needed to reach NTU from my boarding school.
When i got onto the bus, the retarded driver deliberately bent my poster for some unknown reason and that crumpled the board of my poster.
I was seriously wondering what's wrong with him.
Can you imagine someone damaging your work just right before the assessment?
It's my A levels H3 research oral presentation assessment okay!!!!!
lucky enough, I laminated my poster :P
Anyway, one of my assessors wasn't able to be present today
and therefore, i will have to go down to NTU again on the 5th of March for my second assessment
The rest of my friends have already ended their H3 research officially =(
Besides, thanks for your encouragement so early in the morning, Dominic.
I was so touched. ^.-
Strangely, it really helped a lot.
It gave my strength to present confidently today.
Also, I realised today that the participation of H3 related projects in SSEF2009 are now reallowed.
So, Shi Huan, we will work hard together.
I think there is still much in my poster that has to be improved.
After the assessment, i went straight to my school to take a look at how's the choir orientation for j1s going.
I was totally exhausted today
to a point that my eyelid could automatically close by itself.
I am gonna sleep directly after my dinner until tomorrow (:

MISSION FAILED!

呼风焕宇 did not went pass audition.
Nonetheless, i think we have tried our best
and we certainly performed something of substance.
Perhaps more improvement and preparation needed
or the judging criteria were just too superficial
for instance, appearance, voting system that requires supporters to purchase overpriced sandwiches before they can vote..... :S
Anyway, I am overall satisfied with our performance
and i hope that Shi Huan will not be pulled back by this
Seriously, i think your voice is nice and you sing very well
Forgive me for any part of the performance that i might have jeopardised
And most importantly, don't give up your passion!

This week has been a really tiring week for me,
Monday - PE + Bio SPA + choir practice
Tuesday - Econs test
Wednesday - talentime audition + choir practice
Thursday - Book review presentation + printing of super huge poster
Friday - Math assignment + H3 oral presentation rehersal
Saturday - H3 oral presentation examination
Homework to be completed before next week: Math, Chem, Econs and Bio tutorials...
Also, i must write back to my angel so that his/her effort is not wasted
otherwise i would feel really bad for myself
Can i breath, please?

yesterday, today, tomorrow

Had Bio SPA yesterday
as usual, it didn't go smoothly
it never did, i bet this applies to everyone else too

Results for SSEF2009 came out today
my research has been shorlisted
unfortunately, have no choice but to withdraw from competition
as the research paper is considered examination material under H3 subject
not bad, at least it sheds light in my H3 grade
because it must be of a certain standard for it to be shortlisted

Talentime2009 audition tomorrow
finally confirmed the song: 男人不该让女人流泪 - 苏永康
hopefully we will pull an impressive performance
